Headache in the Elderly

Older persons have fewer primary headaches and secondary headaches due to underlying structural causes are more common in this age group. Therefore when there is any type of headache in a person more than 50 years of age, we need to take it more seriously and investigate it more thoroughly. The risk of serious secondary disorders in persons older than 65 years is 10 times more than in younger persons. Blood clots, tumors, giant cell arteritis and glaucoma as the cause of headaches needs to be ruled outin the elderly. It is therefore imperative for all elderly patients with a headache to consult a specialist doctor.
